A Bit About Me

I am a pianist and harpsichordist from Lucca, Italy. I graduated with full marks from the Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali “L. Boccherini” in my hometown, where I subsequently obtained my second-level academic diploma with honours. I continued my studies with Konstantin Bogino, Bruno Canino and Pier Narciso Masi, as well as with Boris Bloch and Aquiles Delle Vigne at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and Joaquín Achúcarro at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. I also completed the three-year advanced course in Chamber Music at the Imola Piano Academy, graduating with a special distinction.

My interest in Baroque music led me to study harpsichord at the Conservatory of Florence, where I earned my diploma. Since then, I have enjoyed performing as a harpsichordist with a variety of ensembles, alongside my work at the piano.

Chamber music has always been central to my musical life. I have performed with Cristiano Rossi, Mario Ancillotti, Boris Bloch and Michele Marasco, as well as principal players and musicians from La Scala, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestra della Toscana, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Paris Opera. Particularly important to me are my longstanding partnership with bassoonist Paolo Carlini, with whom I have explored an extensive repertoire and given several world premieres, and the piano duo I share with my wife, Nadia Lencioni. I have also won prizes in national and international music competitions.

My performances have taken me to venues and concert series including Teatro La Fenice, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Museo Teatrale alla Scala, the Palau in Barcelona, California State University and San Francisco State University, the Wiener Saal in Salzburg, Teatro San Benito Abad and Sala Villanueva in Mexico City, and the Milli Auditorium in Istanbul. I have appeared for the Filarmonica Laudamo in Messina, the Società Riccitelli, the Amici della Musica of Modena, Campobasso and Pistoia, Emilia Romagna Festival, the Victoria International Arts Festival in Malta, Camerino Festival and Anima Mundi in Pisa. Other engagements have included the Saal am Palais and the University of Music “Franz Liszt” in Weimar, and the Italian Cultural Institutes in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Lisbon and London. As a soloist, I have performed with orchestras including I Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan, the Oradea Philharmonic Orchestra, the State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra and the Istanbul Philharmonic.

My recordings reflect my interest in both established repertoire and lesser-known works and transcriptions. For Brilliant Classics, I have recorded Glazunov’s music for piano duet and two pianos, Romantic music for bassoon and piano, and a forthcoming album devoted to twentieth-century Italian repertoire. My discography also includes historical transcriptions of Puccini’s music for piano duo, released by Tactus; Beethoven’s Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 in Ignaz Moscheles’s arrangements for piano and sextet, for Ema Vinci; and Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto and overtures in Moscheles’s arrangements, for Da Vinci Classics. With flautist Filippo Rogai, I have also recorded an album dedicated to Piazzolla for Da Vinci Classics.

Alongside performing, I have devoted much of my work to creating opportunities for music to be heard, shared and studied. I was a founding member of the Sinfonia Music School in Lucca in 1995 and have directed concert seasons, festivals and international masterclasses. I founded and served as artistic director of the Francigena International Arts Festival until 2015, overseeing around 250 concerts and 50 masterclasses between 2010 and 2015, and established the Francigena Chamber Orchestra. I have also maintained a longstanding collaboration as artistic consultant to the International “Boris Christoff” Prize in Buggiano Castello. I am currently artistic director of Associazione Musicalia, developing cultural and educational projects including Oltremusica.

Teaching is an equally important part of my work. I have taught at the conservatories of Reggio Calabria, Monopoli, Salerno, Livorno, Siena, Perugia and Lucca, and I currently hold a tenured teaching position in piano at the “G. Puccini” Conservatory in La Spezia. I have also given masterclasses at American universities. I am pursuing a doctorate within an Italian national PhD programme, with a research project focused on piano pedagogy.

In addition to my four academic qualifications in music, I hold a first-level university Master’s degree in Event Management, awarded with full marks.
